India Bans Rice Shipments to Curb Price Rises

The Indian government has taken a decisive step to curb the soaring food prices caused by crop damages due to adverse weather conditions. In an effort to ensure an adequate supply of rice for domestic consumers, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification prohibiting the export of non-basmati rice with immediate effect. This ban is set to be in place for one year. Basmati rice, a long-grain variety of rice grown in India and Pakistan, is not affected by the ban.
