Navi Mumbai Airport to Open by Dec 2024: Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, has announced that the highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will be fully operational by December 24, 2024. The declaration was made during the Adani Group’s annual general meeting, emphasizing the group’s commitment to meeting the project’s deadline.

A Game-Changing Project in Panvel, Maharashtra
The NMIA is currently under construction on a sprawling 1,160-hectare site located in Panvel, Maharashtra. With an estimated cost of approximately ₹16,700 crore, this airport is set to become one of the key infrastructural landmarks in the region. It is designed to feature two runways and six terminals, enabling it to handle an impressive 90 million passengers annually.
Relieving Congestion and Boosting Economic Growth
Adani stressed the importance of the NMIA as one of the Adani Group’s flagship initiatives. He affirmed that the project is progressing according to schedule, expressing confidence that it will be a significant game-changer for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The NMIA is expected to alleviate the congestion experienced at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, which currently serves as the busiest airport in India, catering to over 80 million passengers each year. By distributing air traffic to the NMIA, the strain on CSMIA will be significantly reduced, resulting in a smoother and more efficient air travel experience.
Moreover, the NMIA is anticipated to spur economic growth in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Being home to a multitude of industries, such as IT, manufacturing, and tourism, the region will benefit greatly from the increased connectivity and enhanced transport infrastructure provided by the airport. This development is expected to attract more investments, create job opportunities, and bolster overall business activities.
Government’s Support and Acknowledgment

The government of Maharashtra has warmly received Gautam Adani’s announcement. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his enthusiasm for the NMIA, emphasizing that it will transform the face of the state. Shinde further highlighted the potential for the airport to generate new employment opportunities and facilitate business expansion, bringing prosperity to the region.
A Remarkable Feat in India’s Aviation Sector
The Navi Mumbai International Airport stands as one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. Its completion within the stipulated timeframe will mark a significant milestone for the Indian aviation industry. With its state-of-the-art facilities, capacity to handle a massive influx of passengers, and its strategic location in the bustling Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the NMIA is poised to revolutionize air travel and stimulate economic growth.
As December 2024 draws near, the anticipation for the Navi Mumbai Airport continues to grow. The completion of this ambitious project will undoubtedly contribute to the advancement of India’s aviation sector while serving as a testament to the Adani Group’s dedication to delivering world-class infrastructure on time.
