Record-Breaking Rainfall

The incessant rainfall commenced on Sunday night and persisted throughout Monday morning. Palam recorded the highest rainfall at 117.2 mm, while the Safdarjung weather station reported 112.1 mm of rainfall, the highest for July since 1981.

Flooding and Disruptions

The heavy downpour caused the Yamuna river to overflow, resulting in the submergence of numerous low-lying areas in Delhi and Noida. The water level in the river surged to 205.59 meters, nearing the danger mark of 206.68 meters. The dire situation prompted the suspension of Delhi Metro services, including the busiest Blue Line. Indira Gandhi International Airport also experienced delays and cancellations of flights.

Precautionary Measures and Red Alert

In response to the calamity, the Delhi government declared a public holiday and advised residents to remain indoors. Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, were closed. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Delhi and nearby regions, warning of further rainfall in the coming days.
